Something occurred to me this evening, there is a serious language shift in 1 Timothy 1:10 because I have five different bibles sitting around me that have similar language in once sense but the content changes. The first Bible is from 1901, more specifically the Revised Standard Edition from 1901, the next bible is the 2011 New International Version, the Harper Collins Study Bible including Apocryphal and Deuterocanonical Books, The New American Bible Revised Edition-St Joseph Edition, and The Guideposts Parallel Bible which has the King James-NIV-Living Bible-Revised Standard. In doing a comparative analysis the verse does not align with each other with a few exceptions.
1901 RSV- "for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be anything else contrary to the sound doctrine..."
Harper Collins- "Fornicators, sodomites, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and what ever else is contrary to the sound teaching"
New America-"the unchaste, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to sound teaching,"
2011 NIV-"for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders, and liars and perjurers-and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.
Parallel Bible; KJV-"for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;"
Parallel Bible; NIV-"for adulterers and perverts, for slave traders, and liars and perjurers-and any for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine"
Parallel Bible; Living Bible-"Yes these laws are made to identify sinners, all who are immoral, and impure; homosexuals, kidnappers, liars and all others who do things that contradict the glorious Good News of our blessed God, whose messenger I am."
Parallel Bible; RSV-"immoral persons, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine."
Only two Bible mention the word homosexual (see the mis-translation of arsenkoitai). Fornicators, adulterers, immoral, slave traders, menstealers/kidnappers, etc are pretty self explanatory, but sodomites has several connotations. One being that anal sex is being prohibited as it is non-procreative sex so that could mean man/woman, man/man or woman/woman as there is no contextual reference other than the fall of Sodom and Gamorrah. Perverts, how is the word being used versus what is intended by the apostles? Again this is an example of indirectly making judgments and accusations but violating that passage about "thou shall not judge..." There is also a drastic shift from the KJV Bible, "whoremonger." How does the shift from whoremonger to homosexual happen? A whore is a prostitute, in Biblical times they were usually slaves that were used to not only collect money but also to collect information. Men as well as women were forced into prostitution (although some people voluntarily sold themselves). Monger is a purveyor of goods and services, a cheesemonger, fishmonger, etc. So a whoremonger, well in short, a pimp. In other words a slave trader or possible a slave owner. If you are still sitting there reading this and scratching your head/chin/ear trying to follow the logic, so am I.
In the I.T. world we call scareware, you get this big giant popup on your computer monitor saying you have a virus and to call an 800 number to pay them money to clean your computer but you really don't have a virus, well I believe this what some of the publisers, i.e. committees are trying to force you to believe. And it's like today, I went our cities Pride festival today and volunteered to help my church, well I went for lunch and as I came back my pastor was engaged in albeit intellectual scriptural debate with some young men and a young lady about the LGBTQ plus community and Biblical beliefs. The young group were only espousing what they had been taught and backing up their argument with same regurgitated rhetoric they have been fed. I give them kudos for standing up for what they believe but also maybe take the time to do some of their own research, the "because I said so" defense is Byzantinian at best.
Sorry if I am re-posting something I have posted before.
